Dr. John R. Downs is a Professor Emeritus of Surgery and one of the founders of Sports Medicine at Michigan State University. An avid fisherman and upland game bird hunter, Dr. Downs and his wife June, were searching for a retirement location. Their search took them from New Brunswick to British Columbia, but when they visited Munising, Grand Island, Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior and Alger County their quest ended. Settling on Five Mile Point, on property acquired from Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, they built their homestead. Locating the ideal recreational areas in Alger County and sharing these with like-minded persons is their goal.
